The legendary KWPN stallion Negro preferent (Ferro x Variant) passed away

The preferent stallion Negro (by Ferro) has passed away at the respectable age of 30. The stallion, born in 1995, lived at Van Olst Horses in Den Hout until his last breath and leaves a considerable legacy to dressage horse breeding, in which powerful movements, the ability to collect, a strong topline and a good work ethic are evident.

Negro, bred by Wouter Borgers in Lunteren, left an important mark on the dressage sport. His offspring have managed to stand out time and again, even on the World stage. Negro sired 38 offspring at the Big Tour level, of which two-time Olympic Champion Valegro is by far the most famous. But the legacy of the black stallion is even larger: Negro has ten approved sons and eighteen approved grandsons with the KWPN.

Negro himself showed a lot of talent as a dressage horse too; anyone who has seen the stallion in action will confirm that. After his performance at the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses (2001), the comment was that this was a horse ‘for the big ring’. He was active at Intermediate II level with Anne van Olst, but an injury took away the ability to compete at Grand Prix.
As a breeding stallion, Negro stamped important dressage traits consistently. His direct offspring broke through at the highest level, but he is now also a popular sire in the dam line. The combination Lord Leatherdale x Negro in particular is a proven formula. At Van Olst Horses, this pairing was made frequently, with the most famous example being the multiple World Champion and Olympic stallion Glamourdale.

KWPN-NA interviewed Gertjan Van Olst for the Virtual AGM. We will share this interview with you soon. We are honored and grateful that we had the chance to meet Negro and that Gertjan shared the story of his legendary stallion with us. Gertjan and Anne, and everyone at Van Olst Horses, we offer our sincere condolences for the loss of this very special horse.
