KWPN Erkend Studbooks & Stallions

Imothep (Indoctro pref x Serena H by Calvados keur x Dominard) Owner: Hyperion Stud, LLC; Breeder: A.H.A. Hassing, NL

The KWPN has always been an open studbook: to make further progress in breeding, breeders can combine foreign stallions with their KWPN mares, or breed KWPN foals from foreign mares. We are talking about horses from studbooks that are recognized by the KWPN.

To be Erkend a studbook must meet the following conditions:

  • The studbook (or parent studbook) must be recognized by the European Union.
  • The studbook must have a breeding goal and selection methods that are sufficiently like the breeding goal and selection methods of the KWPN.
  • The studbook must be able to genetically and performance-wise contribute to the betterment of KWPN breeding, as demonstrated by the position of the studbook on the WBFSH rankings. Over the last three years, the studbook must have been among the best seventeen for dressage or jumping a minimum of two times.

Beginning in 2018, the list of Erkend studbooks has been expanded from the best 17 WBFSH member studbooks to ALL warmblood horse studbooks that are full members of the WBFSH. Some still have restrictions.

The KWPN might add other studbooks to the list  in order to refine or improve the KWPN horse based on a close relation between the populations, especially for mares. Examples are the English Thoroughbred and the large size Hackney.

KWPN Erkend Studbooks

KWPN Erkend – Riding Type
  • Canadian Warmblood (CSHA, CWBHA) on a case by case basis
  • ISR/Oldenburg NA on a case by case basis
  • American Warmblood Registry on a case by case basis

Horses registered with studbooks that are either not full WBFSH members or do not have a European parent studbook with a breeding goal that matches that of the KWPN will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Please visit the WBFSH website to get a complete listing.

KWPN Erkend – Harness Type
  • Dutch Hackney studbook – Large size
  • American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) NA ONLY
  • Hackney Horse Society- England (large size)

KWPN Erkend Stallions

Besides Erkend studbooks there are also Erkend stallions. The decision to give Erkend status to an individual stallion is determined by the KWPN. In general, an Erkend stallion is a stallion that has been approved by an Erkend Studbook and that has been individually accepted for breeding by the KWPN. They have the same status as a KWPN approved stallion. Foals from Erkend stallions and KWPN mares therefore are eligible for full papers (meaning direct Foalbook registration).

Erkend status is only given to exceptionally good performance stallions. Erkend stallions must pass the same veterinary exams as KWPN Approved stallions (radiographs, endoscopic exam and semen evaluation) and must have Grand Prix sport records. The KWPN will determine whether to accept outside stallions for KWPN breeding. Since 2018, the KWPN automatically gives stallions Erkend status that are in the top 10 of the WBFSH sire ranking.

Find a list with stallions from affiliate studbooks that were Erkend by the KWPN in 2022 by clicking here. The WBFSH ranking has also brought new Erkend stallions: in 2022, Desperados and Sir Donnerhall received Erkend status this way. In 2023, the NA bred Gelders stallion Finale is Erkend, the dressage stallions Nintendo, Blue Hors St. Schufro and Nespresso received Erkend status and several more. We will hopefully be able to post updated (2023/ 2024) lists soon.

Registration possibilities for crosses with N.A. Warmblood studbooks depend on the reciprocal status of a studbook with its European parent registry.

  • BWP – Stallions approved in N.A. are also approved for breeding in Belgium and therefore are considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N.A. are considered Erkend.
  • Hanoverian – Stallions approved in N. A. are also approved for breeding in Germany and are therefore considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N. A. are considered Erkend.
  • Holsteiner – Stallions approved in N. A. are not considered Erkend. Mares are considered Erkend if their sire was approved in Germany.
  • Oldenburg Horse Breeding Society – Stallions approved in N.A. are also approved in Germany and therefore are considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N.A. are considered Erkend.
  • Selle Français – Stallions approved in N. A. are approved for breeding in France and are therefore considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N. A. are considered Erkend.
  • Swedish – Stallions approved in N. A. have reciprocal status with Sweden on a case by case basis. Stallions with reciprocal status are considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N.A. are considered Erkend if their sire was approved in Sweden or qualifies for reciprocal status with Sweden.
  • Trakehner – Stallions approved in N. A. must meet additional requirements for reciprocal status with the Trakehner Verband. Stallions with reciprocal status are considered to be from an Erkend studbook. Mares born in N. A. are considered Erkend if their sire was approved in Germany or has reciprocal status with the Trakehner Verband.
  • Rheinland Pfalz-Saar, Polish Trakehner, American Warmblood Society and other registries are not considered to be Erkend studbooks by the KWPN. Foals out of or by horses from these registries may receive Register B papers.
  • Crosses with non-sporthorse breeds (Appaloosa, Arabian, Belgian or other Draft breeds, Morgan, AQHA, Paint, Pinto, Lippizan, etc.) or unregistered horses are eligible for Register B papers.
  1. Always contact the KWPN-NA office prior to breeding to make sure of registration possibilities when using any outside stallion.
  2. In order to be registered in the Foalbook or Register A, a dam’s sire must be approved by the KWPN or an Erkend Studbook.
  3. If the sire of a Register B or CP mare is KWPN Approved, Erkend or registered in the KWPN Foalbook, that mare’s offspring will qualify for Foalbook. Otherwise the foal will qualify for Register B only.
  4. If the sire of a KWPN Certificate of Pedigree mare is KWPN Approved, Erkend or registered in the KWPN Foalbook and the mare is Warmblood/Thoroughbred breeding for three generations, her offspring will qualify for Register A. Otherwise the foal will qualify for Register B only.
  5. Foals with one Hunter parent will be registered as a Hunter type. Horses may be accepted into Dressage or Jumper by decision of the jury upon successful studbook inspection at age three or older.
