Clare Krska and Romincka take the Gold

Sunday morning eleven horse/rider combinations vied for the title in the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Final for riders 14-18 presented by Dressage Today. Clare Krska, 18, from Olathe, KS, rode her 16th birthday present Romincka  to the Gold. This was Clare's first trip to the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals and she heads on to NAJYRC competition in Lexington next week.

Developing Horse Championships

Wayne, IL - D G Bar Ranch topped the leader board as owners of both Champion and Reserve Champion in the Four-Year-Old division. Willy Arts piloted DG Brendo (Florencio x Sierra Siren by Volckmar bred in the U.S. by Lukes Bianko) to a win with a score of 8.46. DG Bantana (Flemmingh x Lantana V by Hemmingway bred in The Netherlands by P.Verdellen) , ridden by Caitlin Masiel, earned an impressive 8.32 for Reserve Champion in the division.

Reserve Champion in the Five-Year-Old division, Adje, a bay Dutch Warmblood gelding (Rosseau x Rodazdoruke by Jazz bred in the Netherlands by J.Pansier), was ridden by Willy Arts. The duo scored high with a performance on the championship test that elevated them from their fifth-place standing in Friday's Preliminary Test, finishing with a combined score of 8.116.

Ashley Holzer & Pop Art Win Grand Prix Kür at Lingen

In preparation for the Canadian squad at the World Equestrian Games, Ashley Holzer and Pop Art (Amsterdam x Cabochon) won the Grand Prix Musical Freestyle on Saturday at the International Dressage Festival CDI4* in Lingen, Germany, with 76.300%. Fellow Canadian Cheryl Meisner on Paganini (Havidoff x Statuar) placed ninth with 69.400%.

Spooner and Pako win Derby in La Baule
May 17, 2010

On Saturday, May 15, Richard Spooner won the derby at the CHIO in La Baule (France). The American rider and his gelding Pako (Farmer out of Epris by Rubinstein-Lorenz x Formateur, breeder Deborah P. Harrison, CA) had the only clear round in the 1,100-meter course with a pond and 21 jumps. His time 162 seconds therefore did not matter. Spooner and Pako won € 16.500 for their effort.

Florianus approved by KWPN

The Grand Prix dressage stallion Florianus was approved by the KWPN recently after a short performance test of five days on American soil. This was the first time that a KWPN performance test took place in America under the supervision of its daughter organization, the KWPN-NA.

The 1987 KWPN stallion Facet (Vanitas x Tolbert x Courville xx) was humanely euthanized today for colic-related reasons. Facet competed in Europe at CDI***s in the Small Tour and Grand Prix with former- Olympian Ellen Bontje in 1996-2000, then enjoyed further success with German Young Rider Gerda Lehmann prior to his sale to owner Gay Walker in February 2003.

Gribaldi Deceased

The KWPN approved Trakehner stallion Gribaldi has died. Gribaldi recently earned the preferent predicate and is the sire of Moorlands Totilas and IPS Painted Black . “With very great pain and sadness in our heart we had to say goodbye to Gribaldi today” is on the website of Edward Gal. A tear in his aorta eventually became fatal. The stallion was 16 years old.

KWPN Select Sale

This year again, the KWPN Select Sale (KSS) was the final event of the KWPN Stallion Show. Thirty-one horses went under the hammer. The highest bid was for Countdown H (Cornet Obolensky x Corland), who was sold to Stoeterij de Sterrenhof for € 90,000. Total sales were € 1,065,000. The average sales price of € 34,355 was approximately € 3,000 lower than last year's average but € 3,000 higher than the average sale price in 2008.

16 Horses Pass Vet Check for Masters

KWPN Stallion Show

On the first day of the 2010 KWPN Stallion Show, 18 out of 22 jumping stallions were selected for the performance test. Tomorrow is day two of the second and third round viewings for jumping stallions.

Each stallion selected for the third round viewing or performance test will be posted on the “results” page. A webpage of each stallion selected for the third round viewing will be posted on the results page. The webpages contain information about the stallions and video footage of their performance in the chute during the second round viewing. These will be available later this evening.

KWPN-NA Change of Officers

At their last board meeting, the KWPN-NA BOD elected new board officers. For 2010 Willy Arts will be the Chair, Christine McCarthy the Vice Chair, Susan Taylor the Treasurer and Judy Reggio the Secretary. Also Dan Ruediger has been added as a new board member. Dan has served on the MC for the past four years.

The board wishes to thank Christine McCarthy for her contributions as Chair over the past two years. Through her efforts and diligence, the organization has moved forward on many fronts. Of course the work is never done and we look forward to the leadership that Willy Arts will provide for the coming year.

Totilas Sets New Freestyle Record of 92%

LONDON, Dec. 16–Moorlands Totilas ridden by Edward Gal set a new world Grand Prix Freestyle record of 92.300% Wednesday night to claim the World Cup qualifier at the Olympia International Horse Show.

Totilas and Gal shattered the previous record of 90.75% that they had created at the European Championships in August. Totilas and Edward finished a staggering more than 11 percentage points higher than second place. Their score was the third time this year they have set new world records in the freestyle and all of them in England.

Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival, a KWPN 12-year-old chestnut gelding by Jazz, scored 81.950% to finish second, as they did in Tuesday night’s Grand Prix.

Totilas Wins and Parzival 2nd at Olympia International Horse Show

LONDON, Dec. 15–Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas came within less than half of a percent point of their world record to claim the Grand Prix at Olympia International Horse Show World Cup qualifier Tuesday night. The pair posted a score of 83.66 per cent, just 0.43 % below their world record of 84.09% at the European Championships.

 

Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival also scored above 80%, posting a mark of 81.277 %.

Jacques Verkerk leaves KWPN

Harderwijk - On January 1, 2010, inspector/editor Jacques Verkerk will no longer be employed by the KWPN, after almost 15 years of service. The reason for the separation is a difference of opinion between the KWPN and Mr. Verkerk.
 
Among Mr. Verkerk's duties was serving as the regional inspector for the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel, and as inspector and judging chairman of the KWPN-NA. Since 1999, he travelled annually to North America for KWPN-NA inspections.
 
A replacement for Mr. Verkerk will be sought in collaboration with officials in the affected regions and the KWPN-NA, as he has already resigned from his duties.

Seven KWPN horses were awarded the Crown predicate for their sport results in 2009. The Crown predicate is a performance award for KWPN stallions, mares and Geldings competing at the highest levels in sport. Horses must be ranked within the top 200 horses in the year’s final WBFSH standings. Horses must be on file with the KWPN-NA.

KWPN Tops WBFSH Rankings

For the sixth consecutive year, the KWPN maintained its number one position as the best jumper studbook in the world.

In addition to this outstanding achievement, KWPN dressage horses climbed to number one for the first time in over a decade. For many years, the Hanoverian studbook held the leading dressage position, but now the KWPN has taken its place.

Equally impressive is that KWPN horses lead the individual rankings as well. For example, the Olympic champion Hickstead is still the best jumper, and the European Champion Parzival is the new top dressage horse.

Mythilus Passses Away

Courtney King Dye's Olympic Mount, Mythilus (Ferro x Flemiena/Furioso x Nimmerdor) passed away on Friday, Ocotber 9th.

Mythilus was was taken to Fairfield Equine after he began to colic Thursday afternoon. Although there were some hopeful lulls of comfort, overall his pain became worse and worse. At about 10:30 pm it was clear that surgery was inevitable. Dr. Rick Mitchell and his staff did everything they could, but they found an inoperable abnormality in Myth’s colon and were left with no choice but to euthanize him. He was at buried at Courtney’s Bel Aire farm.

In 2007 Mythilus was the top ranked horse in the United States in the small Tour, and he was Horse of the Year Intermediare 1 with an average score of 73%. In 2008 he moved up to Grand Prix with much success. He earned a spot on the US Olympic team by placing 3rd overall in the Final Selection Trials with an overall average of 73.333%.

Mythilus was bred by P. H. Sinke and owned by John and Leslie Malone of Harmony Sporthorses.

Day two at Dressage at Devon continued with more champions in the breed ring. Rabiola (Métall x Fabiola/Zadok bred by P. Crum) owned by Iron Spring Farm, won the Mare Championship for the third year in a row with an amazing score of 94.00%. Rabiola was the Dressage at Devon Grand Champion in 2006, Reserve Champion in 2008 and again in 2009.

Record Score at European Championships

Another World Record breaking day lifts score over the magical nineties

The final day of the European Championships dressage proved to be another record breaking day for dressage as a sport. The magical 90% was passed in a dazzling Freestyle to Music. Edward Gal and Totilas had already set the Freestyle record score at 89.40% a month ago at the Exquis World Dressage Masters in Hickstead. This time they raised the standard to 90.750%.

Totilas KWPN Erkend

After winning the silver medal at the European Championships and many other international dressage wins during 2009, the KWPN has granted Totilas Erkend status for his success at the highest level of competition.

Although Moorland's Totilas will not be bred while he is in competition, this means that future foals will be registered in the KWPN Foalbook. The stallion's veterinary report will be published in IDS at a later date.

Moorlands Totilas smashes record

Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas (Gribaldi x Glendale) smashed the World record Grand Prix at the Alltech European Championships in Windsor. In the slipstream the Dutch team smashed the team result record by scoring 238,595% for the team gold medal, an all time high average score of 76,175%.

Great Britain won their first time ever dressage team silver medal while Germany won the team bronze.

Individual Erkend status for Vegas USA

The KWPN stallion committee meets regularly to see which stallions competing internationally qualify for the status of being Individually Erkend for KWPN breeding. This year the stallion Vegas (Voltaire x Dulsina by Joost) was one of those stallions.

In order to receive Erkend status, stallions have to prove themselves at the highest levels of international sport, or through the performance of their offspring, or through a combination of the two. The other two stallions receiving Erkend status are Clinton and Calvaro.

Westpoint Champion Six-Year Olds in Verden

After first winning the qualifier, Emmelie Scholtens from the Netherlands rode the Jazz son Westpoint (dam Jerlinda elite pref by Michelangelo) to claim the championship title for the six-year olds in Verden with a final score of 9.0.

Westpoint’s trot was very active, very powerful, but a little contracted and earned him 8.8 points. The jury was very impressed with his - uphill, with a strong jump off the ground and very clear in three beat - canter, which earned 9.5 point. Westpoint was bred by M. Habraken and is owned by VDL Stud and Adrie Jespers.

No "All Breeds" certificates in 2009

July 25th: Day of the Gelders Horse

The 27th "Day of the Gelders" horse will take place at the Market Square in Hengelo.

The good quality of the Gelders mares seen at the studbook inspections promises some very nice Gelders horses in Hengelo. The day will also feature some KWPN Hanress horses.

The keuring will take place in the morning, first the foals and then the mares. In the afternoon the Gelders Horse of the Year will be announced. Besides the keuring, the day will also feature the Gelders Horse in sport, both in driving competition and dressage.

Eventing at KWPN Horse Days

The KWPN Horse Days program has been expanded with a championship for five-year-old event horses on Monday, August 17. This is the first time for a Young Horse Championship in the eventing discipline in Holland.

This new championship was based on the very popular German Bündeschampionat. Having the championship at Horse Days gives more people – that otherwise wouldn’t have – the opportunity to watch an eventing competition. If the competition is a success this year, a six-year-old class might be added for next year.

Special Prizes awarded at CHIO Aachen

As Dressage Champion Aachen 2009, the special prize for the owner of the horse that collected the most points in the Grand Prix CDIO Tour, sponsored by the Liselott Schindling Foundation for the Promotion of Dressage, was awarded to Ravel's owner, Akiko Yamazaki.

The total score for Ravel and Steffen Peters score after all three competitions was 240.347 points, ahead of Anky van Grunsven on IPS Salinero 232.445, and Hans Peter Minderhoud and Exquis Nadine with 226.9689.

Torn ligament ends jumping career

No Mercy (Libero H x Jeantal by Dillenburg), the Grand Prix jumper of Christina Liebherr from Switzerland, will no longer be competing in sport. The 14-year old Libero H son tore a tendon on Tuesday at the CHIO in Aachen, ending a very successful sport career. Three weeks ago No Mercy finished second in the St. Gallen five star. He also finished well in Vigo, Den Bosch en Rotterdam. He placed fourth in the Las Vegas World Cupk this past April.

KWPN Horse Days are the showcase for the best the KWPN has to offer: the top mares of the National Mare Selection; four, five, and six-year-old offspring of KWPN stallions competing in the Dutch Championships for young dressage horses and jumpers; and three-year-old jumper mares vying for the title Dutch Free-Jumping Champion.

The KWPN is working toward increasing the appeal and accessibility of the KWPN Horse Days to its foreign guests by offering the option of a guided visit to the event. The KWPN aims to enhance guests’ experiences by providing them specific information about horses that are of particular interest to them. For the second consecutive day Meredith Michaels Beerbaum was on the path to her third Rolex FEI World Cup™. The former American competing for Germany, won the first competition on Thursday and also the second class on Friday. But her lead on McLain Ward and Albert Zoer is not big. The excitement is back in the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final. American favorite Steffen Peters did the incredible as his 11 year old gelding Ravel (Contango x Hautain pref by Democraat, breeder H. de Man) offered everything almost effortlessly. No weak points and no mistakes could be seen. His score of 77,915% was a personal best and while the audience went completely wild after the test, Ravel seemed to be unaffected by the applause and cheering and simply walked on a long rein.

Annual Meeting a Success

The 2008 Annual Meeting of the KWPN of North America took place March 19th through 21st. The weekend started of with a 'getting to know each other' Welcome Reception at the hotel on Thursday evening.

Both Friday and Saturday mornings featured lectures at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar, and were followed by practical sessions held at the farm of Steffen and Shannon Peters.
Lecturers included Cor Loeffen from the Deurne Equestrian College, who talked about linear scoring and evaluating conformation. Steffen Peters on the importnat qualities in a Grand Prix horse, and how to adapt training to the horse. Janko van de Lageweg, from VDL Stud, talked about matching up mares and stallions for breeding. Dr. Lisa Metcalf talked about optimizing breeding and pregnancy rates. And Dr. Deborah P. Harrison gave her annual report on the recently held AAEP convention.

Vegas jumps clear in Syracuse

The fourteen-year-old KWPN stallion Vegas (s. Voltaire) and Christine McCrae jumped clear for a first place in the $100,000 Budweiser Grand Prix of Syracuse.
McCrea and Vegas were the only pair to have a clear round, being the first to accomplish that feat in the event’s six year history. McCrea never thought she’d be the only clear, especially competing against Olympic riders and horses. Vegas jumped cleanly, very carefully with a very quick finish giving them a time of 71.50. McCrea is hoping for a ticket to the World Cup Finals in Las Vegas next April.
