Preferent stallion Atleet passed away
Preferent Dutch Harness stallion Atleet passed away unexpectedly at his loving home – Bill & Erin Duffy’s Grand Finale Farm – in Massachusetts.
Atleet was bred by Ronnie Aalders in the Netherlands. The 20-year-old Harness stallion was sired by Patijn out of Sintia ster prefent by Waterman x Farao. He was owned by Harmannus Boelens, when he was approved in 2008. He was named the Champion of the performance test with an average mark of 9: his hind leg use being rated at 9.5. The Gebr. van Manen in Ede then became the registered owner, after which he was sold to the Duffy family in 2021. Atleet became Harness Horse of the Year in 2017, in 2020 he was declared keur and in 2024 he was declared preferent, with the Duffy family personally receiving the award at the stallion inspection in Den Bosch.
In the Netherlands, Atleet has 474 KWPN registered offspring of which 57 ster mares, 14 keur mares, 7 elite mares and a preferent mare. Atleet sired three approved sons in the Netherlands: keur stallion Eebert (ds Manno), Kapitaal (ds Manno) and Martin Morero (ds Larix). In North America, he sired licensed son Jaleet (ds Plain’s Liberator). Atleet’s approved grandsons are Kordaat (Eebert x Patijn), Magnifiek (Idol x Atleet) and the Gelders stallion Matiz (Eebert x Vitens).
Atleet sired many good broodmares but also exquisite sport horses. Some top scoring offspring that are still competing currently: El Nino (326 winning points), Gerran PSH (260 winning points) and Grandioos (190 winning points). Atleet performed very well himself too: he has 190 winning points, won the stallion competition and the Oregon Trophy with Henk Hammers driving. He was Champion of the ladies class Region North three times with Sanne Welling and with Wim Cazemier Atleet became Champion of the honorary class Region North. With Robbie van Dijk he became Champion of the honorary class Region South. He also competed in America with his owner William Duffy.
The Duffy family considered it an honor to own the legendary stallion Atleet and are deeply saddened by his unexpected passing.
